Example 1.  Consider the functions  [Graphics:Images/BigOMod_gr_11.gif]  and  [Graphics:Images/BigOMod_gr_12.gif].   Show that   [Graphics:Images/BigOMod_gr_13.gif],  over the interval  [Graphics:Images/BigOMod_gr_14.gif].

Solution 1.

Since  [Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_15.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_16.gif]  for  [Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_17.gif] it follows that

[Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_18.gif].

If we set  [Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_19.gif]  and  [Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_20.gif]  then we see that   [Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_21.gif],  over the interval  [Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_22.gif].

[Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_23.gif]

[Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_24.gif]

[Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_25.gif]

[Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_26.gif]

[Graphics:../Images/BigOMod_gr_27.gif]

Combine the above to obtain the desired result.
