2006
JPL Inventions Challenge

The sixth annual JPL
Invention Challenge was
held at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena on December 1th, 2006.
Congratulations to the Costa Mesa High School
Team for placing 2nd and Saddleback High School
for placing 3rd in the competitions.
The purpose of the competition was to provide
some entertainment for the JPL employees and
invited friends. Another purpose was to promote
the science and engineering fields within
the JPL community in a creative and fun way.
This year's JPL Challenge will be
held on December 7th. We look forward to seeing you all there.
More details coming soon.

2006
National Engineering Design Competition
The annual MESA USA National
Engineering Design Competition for 2007 was held in Baltimore,
Maryland. The event was hosted by the University of Maryland Center.
Each of the eight states with pre-college MESA Programs were
represented in the Multi Task Trebuchet Challenge at the junior high
and high school levels. To be the representative of a state, a
Multi-Task Trebuchet team must outperform all regional participants in
that state. Teams were challenged to research, design, construct and
compete with a trebuchet that met projectile, counterweight, and size
characteristics. The trebuchet must be able to perform the task of
distance, accuracy, strength and design efficiency. In addition, teams
were required to submit a research paper detailing all aspects of the
project, make a short oral presentation and create a display board.
California MESA is extremely proud of CSU Fullerton's Costa Mesa High
School and UCI's Roosevelt Middle School. Congratulations to Costa Mesa
High School for taking 3rd and to Roosevelt Middle School for their 1st
place!

2006
College Day @ U.S.C.
On
Saturday, October 28, 2006, the annual college
day for MESA students from San Luis Obispo to
San Diego took place at University of Southern
California Campus. The event was hosted by USC
MESA Center. It included dynamic workshops in
college preparation with topics varying from
financial aid, choosing the right college, college
life, writing the personal essay, SATs, career
exploration, parent workshops, and many more.
In addition, a college fair was held at the
conclusion of the workshops with approximately
fifty colleges and universities from all around
the USA.
CATALINA
TRIP
What a treat for kids who rarely leave Santa
Ana to hike in the natural beauty of the chaparral,
while enjoying the spectacular ocean views.
One young man said it was the best time he had
ever had in his whole life…it has made
him even more determined to achieve his goal
of becoming an environmental biologist.
CIMI (Catalina Island Marine Institute) aims
to excite students about nature and the basic
concepts of marine science and island ecology.
Snorkeling, island ecology hikes, oceanography,
marine biology labs, and ocean kayaking are
included in the CIMI program activities.
Previously, other schools in our center have
taken advantage of this extraordinary opportunity
for their students. Approximately 60 students
from Century, Valley High school, Santa Ana
High school, and Saddleback High School participated
in this year's trip, which took place from the
4th through the 6th of April 2007.
With the help of the MESA program, students
who usually don't leave their local cities
now have an opportunity to interact with other
students and professionals, and-best of all-with
nature.

Institute.
2007 Catalina Island
Marine Institute will be held on April 4-6. See your MESA Advisors for details.
END of the YEAR BANQUET
The 2006 Senior High MESA Banquet had almost
250 attendees. MESA students, parents and
advisors from all high schools served participated
in this annual event.

SMART
Southern MESA Advisors Regional Training
Over 100 MESA teachers from across MESA's southern
Rgion gathered at California State University,
Fullerton on October 7, 2006, to receive hands-on
training for the MESA day math, science and
engineering and computer science activities.
Workshop presenters included experts from
the various MESA Centers in the southern Region
as well as the Washington MESA center. MESA
teachers could choose from workshops specific
to their grade level. Lunch was served at
the nearby Fullerton Marriott Hotel.
In
addition to the workshops, teachers also received
a portfolio imprinted with the MESA logo.

Transcript Review
University Outreach and MESA are teaming p to offer a Transcript Review
for all MESA 11th graders. Transportation and lunch will be
provided to all juniors who sign up for the March 16th event.
Student transcripts will be evaluated by counselors at CSUF.
Students will receive feedback regarding their college eligibility,
participate in a campus tour and be able to hear about college life
from current university students.
Introdction to Engineering
CSUF MESA will again be hosting a 4
week Introduction to Engineering Class for it's current 10th, 11th, and
12th grade students. Students will be selected based on
scholastic achievements and participation in MESA. Lunch and
transportation to CSUF is provided. Students completing the class
with a B or better will receive 3 units of college credit. The
class runs from July 9th to August 2nd, 2007. See your MESA
Advisor for an application.

MASME (MESA Academy for Science and Math Education
MESA teachers from throughout
California will be participating in this training event scheduled for
August 3-5th in San Ramon at the AT&T Learning Center.
